How to Enter

Step 1: Are you eligible?


Yarning is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 7 to 12 from across Australia. If you meet these criteria, move on to the steps below.

Step 2: Select a theme that interests you


You can choose from the following themes:

Country and Connection: Explore the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with the land and waters, and traditional practices.
Identity and Culture: Reflect on what identity and culture means to you.
Family and Community: Share stories of strength, resilience and cultural pride within your community.
Reconciliation: Share your thoughts on reconciliation and its significance.

Step 3: Choose an entry medium


Share your story in the format you want:

Visual Artwork (1 entry, maximum size of 100 cm x 100 cm)
Text (at least 200 words, maximum of 400 words)
Photography (10 images maximum)
Video (at least 2 minutes, maximum of 4 minutes)
Audio (at least 2 minutes, maximum of 4 minutes)

Step 4: Check your file format


Acceptable file types and sizes for each entry medium can be found below:

Visual Arts: Please photograph your artwork. Entrants can upload a photograph file up to 10 MB in the following formats: .jpeg and .jpg, .png, .tiff and .tif
Text: Entrants can upload a file up to 2 MB in the following formats: .pdf, .doc and .docx, and .txt
Photography: Entrants can upload photograph files up to 10 MB each in the following formats: .jpeg and .jpg, .png, .tiff and .tif
Video: Please aim to have a video resolution of at least 1280 x 720 (known as 720p). Entrants can upload a video file up to 500 MB in the following formats: .mpeg, .mp4, .avi and .mov
Audio: Entrants can upload an audio recording of up to 100 MB in the following formats: .m4a, .mp3, and .wav

Step 5: Important information for your entry form


Make sure you have the following information handy so you can fill out the entry form:

School information: Include your school name, year group, a school contact (teacher) and their email/phone number.
Write a brief description of your entry: The description should explain your story and how it is represented in your entry. If your entry is in language, you can submit the English translation in this field.
Parent/guardian details: They’ll need to fill out their name and email if you are under 18.

Entries are now OPEN for the 2026 Yarning competition. Entries will close at 11.59 pm (AEDT) Monday 11 May 2026.
